For the past few years, all ILR BRP cards
that were issued had an expiration date of 31 December 2024.
Regardless of when the cards were issued, the expiration date will remain as 31
December 2024 even if the usual validity period is 10 years.
As BRP cards were not incorporated to the
requirement of EU’s encryption technology, all expiration dates for the cards
were set to 31 December 2024. Under current EU technical specifications, all
BRP cards that are issued after 31 December 2024 should meet the new EU encryption
technology standards. Therefore the issue of BRP cards has been limited by the Home
office.
For those who were granted with the card for
a period of 5 years from 1 January 2020, the card will still have the expiration
date as 31 December 2024 despite having a longer granted period. The Home
office will replace the BRP card free of charge for those in this condition
while ensuring that a short-dated BRP does not affect their immigration status.
The procedure and information for this has not been released by the Home Office
and is not expected to be released until the summer of 2024.
A new UK BRP card format will be released
by the Home Office next year and there will be no restriction to the validation
date of 31 December 2024. The date will be reflected on the period of granted
leave, or be valid for 10 years maximum (5 years for children).
We will provide a further update once we
have more information.
