Due to the COVID-19 cause, there has been changes and updates on the immigration law and practice. Here are the list of summaries updated on the 27th March by the UKVI.

  1. Automatic visa extension for people in the UK
Due to travel restrictions because of coronavirus some individuals may be facing uncertainty in relation to the expiry date of their current visa or leave to remain in the United Kingdom. Most people in the UK whose immigration status is affected by the coronavirus outbreak will get an automatic extension of their visa until 31 May 2020. However, the individuals must contact UKVI to update their records if their visa is expiring. The detail and the reason to stay in the UK should be provided.

  2. Visa Extension
Visa extension process works normally. Individuals will need to be switching from/to a published eligible route and will need to meet the same visa requirements and pay the same application fee. Applicants can apply online as usual and select a biometric submission appointment to attend if they are able to in line with public health guidance. There may be delays in process due to Covid-19 however the terms of their leave will remain the same until the decision is made.

  3. Switch visa inside the UK
If individuals need to apply for a visa from their home country, they will be able to apply from the UK to switch to a long-term UK visa. They’ll need to meet the same visa requirements and pay the UK application fee. This includes those whose leave has been automatically extended to 31 March 2020. They should apply online and select a biometric submission appointment to attend in line with public health guidance. The terms of their leave will remain the same until their application is decided.

  4. Biometric Registration Centres
Individuals will not be regarded as an overstayer or be subject to enforcement action if they are unable to attend a biometric appointment due to Covid-19 or if there are delays in processing their application.

If an applicant has already made an appointment to attend a UKVCAS service point, or a Service and Support Centre (SSC), the applicant will be contacted and told what to do next. The immigration status will not be negatively affected as a result of the applicant not being able to attend an appointment or enroll biometrics at the Post Office.

  5. English Test Centre
English Testing Centres are also affected. Visit theInternational English Language Testing System (IELTS)s website or contact the test centre for more information.
