A ‘biometric’ is information about an individual’s external physical characteristics, such as fingerprints. UKVI use biometric information to deliver security and facilitation in the border and immigration system. The biometrics such as a photograph of their face, and images of their fingerprints that UKVI currently uses enable quick and robust identity assurance and suitability checks on foreign nationals subject to immigration control.

An individual subject to immigration control needs to provide biometric information as part of an application for an immigration product, such as a visa, biometric immigration document or biometric residence card.

UKVI is also taken from individuals who claim asylum, are in the UK but require leave, are unlawfully in the UK, are arrested or detained under the Immigration Acts, are granted immigration bail, lack adequate documentation to establish their identity and nationality and those subject to being deported from the UK.

Who needs to provide biometric information?

Most visa applicants will need to provide their fingerprints and photograph for the purpose of identity verification and attend a biometric appointment. If they are applying for any UK visa that is longer than 6 months, these appointments are a mandatory part of the application. When an application is submitted online, an appointment will be made on a booking website.

Where to register biometric information?

In order to book an appointment, the applicant must create an account on the website of the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) if they are applying for their visa inside the UK. The applicant will be charged a biometric fee of £19.20. Under the EU Settlement Scheme, an applicant is not required to pay for a visa application.

The appointment location will depend on whether the visa application is submitted from within or outside the United Kingdom. If an applicant is inside the UK, they will typically need to visit a UKVCAS service point or a Service and Support Centre (SSC). If they are outside the UK, they will be required to visit a visa application centre.

The fee for biometric appointments varies based on the service and location selected. Appointments at 'core service points' are free, whereas 'enhanced service points' require payment. They can also pay extra for urgent or after-hours appointments, or for additional services such as the use of a premium lounge to facilitate your visit.

If they submit their application outside the UK, they book an appointment on the website of a relevant visa application centre such as VF Global. They will not be charged for biometrics enrollment. If they select ‘premium time slot’ for booking, they need to pay an extra fee.

How to enrol biometric information?

All applicants need to enrol their biometric information. If an applicant is under the age of 18, they should be accompanied by a responsible adult who is named on their application.

The images of all 10 digits of the fingerprint are collected from the digital scanner and full-face digital photos are taken for each applicant.

The applicant brings a printed copy of their appointment confirmation with a clear QR code, as well as their passport or other appropriate travel documents. If their current passport is with UKVI on the day of the appointment, they can provide evidence to explain this and they bring an alternative form of IDs such as a National ID card, expired passport or biometric residence permit/card or UK photographic driving license.

They also make sure to upload the support documents electronically or bring them on the day of the appointment. The required document will vary based on the applicant’s personal circumstances and immigration route.

If they miss an appointment on the scheduled day, they will need to book a new appointment after 24 hours from the original appointment date.

Without biometrics information, the UK visa application will not be processed.
